CONTENT WARNING: VIOLENCE
(3/4) In 2008, the Chinese police came and shot 25 people in my village Amdo Ngaba because they were carrying out a peaceful demonstration against the Chinese. At this time, all three Tibetan Regions were staging demonstrations, and my father sent that story out to the worldwide media. He was arrested again, and went to jail for 6 months.
By 2011, 17 people had self immolated in protest against Chinese occupation, and my father was put back in jail again, because he was accused of releasing this information to the world. However, this time, it wasn’t him, and he refused to say it was. As a result, he was beaten and tortured for a year.
Because he refused to ‘confess’, they arrested my sister to try to force her to say that he had done it. She was only 21 at that time. They stabbed the side of her head with a pencil and beat her badly until she nearly died. My family wanted to take her to hospital but they wouldn’t allow us. Now she’s mentally unwell.
Another of my sisters went to jail when she was 27 for helping to put our neighbour’s body in a car after he had self immolated. That was in 2013. She’s still there now. The Chinese police have told her that if she wants to be released, she has to declare publicly on television that she killed this man (by setting him on fire) so that they can broadcast it to the world. Until now, she has refused.
In Tibet, they rape women in jail, and if there is a baby, they kill the baby. Women have to behave absolutely like dogs and if they don’t, they are severely punished. We don’t know if my sister’s alive or dead now, as nobody can communicate with her.

My heart is broken 3 These are the tragedies that the world barely hears about 🙁 Shame on us.
I can’t like that story. I feel sick reading about your family and what human beings can do to each other. I am happy you are free and safe. You, now carry for your family their hopes and dreams, set them free. Best Wishes Kungam.
Thank you for sharing your story.
Your story is shocking. And I am sorry for your ongoing pain – not knowing how your family members are and them still being at risk. It is important you tell your story. The world needs to know. What has happened in Tibet has too long been silenced.
It’s so easy to forgot how horrible it can be in other parts of the world. Free Tibet was one of those cool causes that everyone jumped on as a teenage. Reading this reminds me why more needs to be done. My heartbreaks knowing what has been done to your family. So glad you have had the chance to move to Australia and tell your story.
Thank you for sharing your story.
Kungam – I wish there was something we could do to help your family back together. Your story has touched me, and I’m sure it wasn’t easy to share. Thank you for opening my eyes.
I hope that inspite of all the horrors you and your family have faced, that you can someday live a peaceful quiet life in this glorious country you are now a part of. Welcome.
Hearing stories like this breaks my heart. I can’t get my head around why nothing is being done about this!
I can believe this. My purse was stolen when I was living in China. I had to go to the Police station. There were 2 people detained there in stocks. I asked my interpreter why they were in stocks and she said it was for shop lifting. They would remain in stocks until their family came to pay the fines.
Your story is why I refuse to travel to China. The way the Chinese have invaded and taken over Tibet, outlawed Tibetan culture and continue to treat the Tibetan people so inhumanely is abhorrent! China will never receive my tourism dollar. I’m sure there are Chinese nationals sympathetic to the Tibetan cause, but from a personal viewpoint I can’t support this regime, or the country behind it. It’s my personal protest!
I hope you hear word of your sister, Kungam. Whether the outcome is good or bad, your family has a right to know. Welcome to Australia.
It is horrific to think that there exists such total disrespect for human life in the name of reputation and power. Despite the horror and the pain in telling the story that is still unfolding, it is important that is told so that the world knows and can stand against such behaviour. I know that that is an idealist attitude. That and the reality of having the means to stop such behaviour does not necessarily meet. However, if it is not known, absolutely nothing can be done. In knowing, sad is the day when any behaviour that transgresses basic human rights is considered acceptable. Thank you for telling your story and welcome. Our hearts go out to your family still in Tibet.
Thank you for bringing this information to the world. Hopefully it will strengthen the Tibetan people even more.
I’m so so sad for your pain and of your family , I m so sorry for the suffering injustice, and brutally that you and your family are experiencing.
I hope for a healthier, kinder, more compassionate world every day.
Now we know why successive Australian governments don’t like refugees. They are living proof that some of our closest trade partners and allies are the grossest of criminal violators of human rights. Its embarrassing when your “friends” are so evil that you have to lock up their victims in your own torture camps to hide the truth about their crimes.
Kungam, I am so sorry to read about your family! Your story paints the sad and harsh reality of the situation in Tibet and it breaks my heart to know this is happening in Amdo Ngaba and throughout Tibet! Sharing your story must be difficult but I thank you for doing it; it touched my heart and opened my eyes! You are making use of your secret weapon…the “pen”…which is mightier than the sword! Never give up!
Remember also, India is not a signatory to the Refugee Convention so Tibetans who live in India are not refugees, they are there as ‘guests’ and are treated incredibly badly by local, state and federal governments and some local people, even being murdered.
We need to bring more Tibetans to Australia NOW. They’re good people with a strong work ethic and will be wonderful Australian citizens. India is no place for Tibetan refugees.
Power and suppression of free speech corrupts in such a horrific way. My heart breaks for you family and country but more I honour your strength and the good will of Tibet
I found it hard to ‘like’ this post but I did so in the hope that it reaches many… God bless all who suffer from oppressive systems
I’m never sure if the people behind the story ever get to read the comments. I’m so sorry this happened to you and your family. I wish there was more I could do to help you. I wish our governments would do more to help your family. We’ll never know your full story through just four posts but I really hope that you get to a start a new story in Australia, a better future, be reunited with your family and sister and are able to tell your children one day about how heroic you family is.
Connie Liu this makes me truly sad, the Chinese government is so corrupt not only towards their own country men but towards HK-ers and Tibetans.
I’m so sorry for you and your family and all the Tibetan people … I was lucky enough to spend time in daramsala and have many fond memories ????
